'Spain aren’t that good...’ – Former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson says Three Lions can WIN Euro 2016
Will Wayne Rooney rise to the occasion again, just as he did back at Euro 2004?
Wednesday, June 1, 2016

Former England Sven-Goran Eriksson believes England can end their wait for a major title and be crowned European Champions this summer in France – with ‘golden boy’Wayne Rooney leading the charge.
Roy Hodgson has named his 23-man Euro 2016 squad ahead of the start of the tournament on June 10.
Fans had a mixed reaction to the announcement on Tuesday, but there’s no denying the Three Lions have a great chance of glory in France given the number of in-form Premier League players in the ranks.
Eriksson took England to three consecutive major tournament quarter-finals in his five years as manager; at the 2002 World Cup, Euro 2004 and 2006 World Cup, where they respectively lost to eventual winners Brazil and twice lost on penalties to Portugal.
But the Swede believes Roy Hodgson can go better with his band of youthful stars.
Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, he told talkSPORT: “Can they win it? Why not?
“Spain dominated football for a while, but I don’t think they’re that good, and I’m not sure Germany have the quality they had some years ago.
“France are playing at home and have a good team, so it will be tough of course, but why not?
“England did really well in all their qualification games, they won them all, so that’s a very good sign.
“Good luck England!”
There is some debate about Hodgson’s team selection ahead of the tournament, with many claiming there is no room for captain Rooney given the form of strike duo Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy.
But Sven insists Rooney MUST be in England’s starting XI.
“I would pick Wayne Rooney, that’s for sure,” the Swede said.
“Where would you play him? He can play anywhere, more or less!
“He’s the golden boy. He’s a man for the big games. He loves being in the squad and I hope he will be in the team.”
Eriksson has been one of England’s most successful managers in recent years, though his team of ‘golden generation’ stars always seem to fall just short of completing with the very best.
When asked about his time as England manager, Sven added: “I miss that job! I will always miss it.
“It was great, I was happy man for five-and-a-half years. To be England manager is probably the best job in the world. I’m proud I had it, but now it’s up to Roy.
“I hope England can do well, I think they can do well.
“There are no easy groups, but I think England will be happy about the group they’re in. They should go through easily.”
